Wow! So much has changed in this Town since we launched this site way back in 2009. From demographics to landscape to housing and economy, we see a very different place when we step out the door. Faces, rents and real estate have shifted hugely even on our no-frills block in the Fruitvale. Our thoughts on the subject could fill too many books and have filled a thousand conversations. All we'll say here is that feelings are mixed--and rents are to damn high!
While so much looks different, one thing that hasn't changed is Oakland's love for local environment, art and neighbor. We hope using our site grows your own connection to this very specific and special place, whether it's via talking a walk, looking for Lake Merritt birds or getting your hands in the dirt.
We've just updated a few sections (is it really 2016 already?!) and have a big site update planned later this year. Meanwhile we'll leave the old intro up--it's a good overview of what's here. Thanks for taking a look!
Intro from 2009/2010:
Oakland is our home, where we live and work, connect with our communities and spend most of our time—where we grow. We started this site because we want you to grow with us.
Grow Your Oakland, a project of queridomundo, is a practical posting of what we love about this place and a fledgling collection of tools for what we think is interesting and engaged living here. It’s a point of connection between individuals and the city we live in, where you can access info about things as diverse as vegetable gardening, visual arts and Lake Merritt birds.
Gardens, art and wildlife all hold opportunities to notice what's going on around us, and to appreciate this place and all the life within it. That awareness and gratitude inevitably grows our connection to Oakland--to the landscape and the animals living in it, to the incredibly diverse range of people we call neighbors--one garden, one walk, one block at a time.
So far we’ve put together a bunch of useful stuff you can access on our downloads page: a quick-start guide to growing vegetables (click here to find out why growing your own matters), the first two volumes in an ongoing series of Oakland Walks, Oakland Farmers Market schedule, and a guide to the birds of Lake Merritt. And while you're on the downloads page grab a poster!
We've also started an artist's spotlight featuring local creatives doing Oakland-related work, some of which you can buy in our store. And we've collected a great initial offering of info on Oakland wildlife and links to great resources for positive Oakland living, info on local volunteer opportunities, saving water and more. Visit our announcements page for news on local events and happenings.
Welcome again and please do sign up if you want to stay updated on new downloads, artists, store items and whatever else we put together. And thanks for growing.
