Birds

Oakland has an enormous diversity of bird species, at least partly due to the existence of Lake Merritt (which happens to be the oldest wildlife refuge in North America). Many migratory birds spend the winter at the Lake, in proximity to people so it's easy to see them close-up. Click here for our Birds of Lake Merritt guide, and here for a comprehensive listing & photos of California birds. The list below is general and not necessarily complete but it's a good look at the variety of local bird life we're lucky enough to share Oakland with.

However we put a few non-insects in this category since most people have no problem calling them bugs. Click here for bugpeople's amazing guide 'Lake Merritt and Greater Oakland Insects'.
